Electric fencing is the most efficient fence in terms of cost and installation.

Technology is constantly changing to make each project easier and easier. The same problems need to be avoided whether we are charging high-tensile, soft smooth wire, or twine fence. And I continue to see folks make many of the same common mistakes. High-tensile, smooth wire, electric fencing is the fastest and most affordable fence that I know about, and its technology has drastically improved over the past 10 years. But many folks are hesitant to use it because they remember old failures — wires breaking, chargers starting fires, wet vegetation shorting out the fence and other troubles. Lay Out Your Fence You will begin the process by laying out your fencing area. Now, this means a lot of prep work. If branches, tall weeds, or trees are laying on your fence it will cause it to short out and therefore be ineffective. Then use loppers and cut back any trees or branches from the area. Once your fencing area is clear, you are ready to start building your fence. Insert Wooden Posts, T-Posts, and Prep for Gates You will need to have round wooden posts at the corners of your fenced areas, where you want your gates to go, and also as supports at the half way point on long stretches of your pasture.

Then you will want to insert T-posts about every feet from one corner post to the other. This may vary depending upon the area that you are fencing. After you have the T-posts in the ground, you can go ahead and hang the gates.

Every year I have visitors checking out my chicken coop, bee hives, and food forest. Yes, they take a peek through my living room window not even blinking an eye when my three dogs bark at them. Bears are, next to coyotes, mountain lions, and eagles, the main predators on my homestead. So, when I decided to get bees, I did a ton of research on the best way to protect my bees. There was not one set-up I really liked, so I took a bunch of ideas and put together my own seasonal bear-proof fencing; you might call it a fortress, but so far, it is working.

How does an electric fence work? When I started reading up on my bear fence I felt like I was back in school. Positive and negative charge, circuit completion, grounding… let me see if I can give you a basic idea: An electric fence uses electric shocks to deter, in this case, the bear from getting into my bee hives.

Being an electric fence salesman and working at a lot of trade shows over the past 15 years I have also heard a lot of great stories from customers about being on the receiving end of those shocking stories. I guess that since I am suppose to know what I am doing around electric fences I should probably never get shocked — right?

Wrong, I get my fair share of them and it usually hurts. I think that some people may have a higher tolerance for the pain that is associated with an electric shock than others. Myself — I have a low tolerance for it.
